Rye Runners

Rye Runners was established in August 2010 and welcomes runners of all levels, from those taking their first steps to those trying to get out of a pace rut, or prepare for a 5km, 10km, half or full marathon. The group is coached by me (UK Athletics Level 2 Coach and author of 3 bestselling books on running) and Jeff Pyrah (England Athletics Running Leader), usually accompanied by Sidney the fox terrier, who you can rely on to be at the back!

Lots of people enquiring about the group have asked me 'how far do you run?' During the hour-long session, we might cover somewhere between 3 and 5 miles, but it's very rarely in the form of a continuous steady run. We focus more on 'quality' training like intervals, speedwork, hills or threshold work, along with some drills and exercises to improve technique and efficiency. This means that everyone gets to work at their own level, even with people of very different speeds/abilities. It's also really valuable in improving your speed and endurance - and it's more fun!

We now meet on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings

Saturdays: We meet at 9am at Bedford Place car park, next to the cricket oval/football pitch on The Salts, close to Rye town centre. There is street parking on side streets off the nearby Camber road (try Kings Avenue) and on the end of Military Road. Occasionally, we train somewhere else, such as Camber Sands, Rye Harbour or Iden. To be notified of any changes to the usual plan, please join the mailing list by emailing info@sam-murphy.co.uk

Wednesdays: We meet at 6.30pm at Truffle Cup Cafe, 10 Cinque Ports Street, Rye. You can park at Jempsons car park for 2 hours free, or park on the streets after 6pm. You can leave your stuff at the cafe while we run and occasionally, we have a hot chocolate afterwards!

The group is not a UK Athletics-affiliated running club - so is open to all. Visiting runners, or those from nearby clubs, are welcome to join us when it suits them, and the sessions are 'pay as you go', so there is no long-term commitment. We are open to runners of all abilities - you don't need to be fast or competitive to benefit...

  • Varied local routes and terrain - from tarmac to trail, beach to hillside
  • Fun, friendly and motivating sessions
  • We have a regular group of 10-20 runners. Newcomers always welcome!
  • If the session is NOT running for any reason, a message will be posted here, and emailed to those who are on the mailing list
