Sam Murphy and Jeff Pyrah set up Rye Runners in August 2010 and we've been growing in size - and ambition! - ever since. We welcome runners of all levels to our multi-ability coached sessions. And for those taking their first steps, we run regular 8-week beginners' courses. Sam and Jeff are both British Athletics qualified coaches and we have qualified running leaders Gareth McCully, Jo Pappenheim, Helen Proud and Ted Wilson assisting, so there is always plenty of support.
Lots of people enquiring about the group ask 'how far do you run?' During the hour-long session, we might cover somewhere between 3 and 6 miles, but it's very rarely in the form of a continuous steady run. We focus more on 'quality' training like intervals, speedwork, hills or threshold sessions, along with some drills and exercises to improve technique, strength and efficiency. The way sessions are structured means that everyone gets to work at their own level, even with people of very different speeds/abilities. As an example, we have sub-7-minute milers and 12-plus-minute milers, all in one happy group. The way we work our sessions is really valuable in improving your speed and endurance - plus it's more fun and sociable than a weekly 7-mile slog with the 'x-minute mile group'!
We meet on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings
Saturdays: We meet at 9am at Bedford Place car park, next to the cricket oval/football pitch on The Salts, close to Rye town centre. If you don't want to pay to park, there is street parking on side streets off the nearby Camber road (try Kings Avenue) and along Military Road. Occasionally, we train somewhere else, such as Camber Sands, Rye Harbour or Iden. To be notified of any changes to the usual plan, please join the mailing list by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
Wednesdays: We meet at 6.30pm at Rye Sports Centre, The Grove, Rye. You can park in the sports centre car park - a fee is payable but tear off the strip on your parking ticket and bring it into the centre, and you'll get a refund all but 50p.
Our group is not a British Athletics-affiliated running club - so is open to all. Visiting runners, or those from nearby clubs, are welcome to join us when it suits them, and the sessions are 'pay as you go', so there is no long-term commitment. We are open to runners of all abilities - you don't need to be fast or competitive to benefit...
- Varied local routes and terrain - from tarmac to trail, field to footpath, beach to hillside

BEGINNERS COURSES - NEXT ONE STARTS APRIL 2017
We have now run five successful complete beginners' courses with financial support from Active Rother, a local initiative to get people active in the area. Our next one will begin on 19th April 2017 - running on Wednesday evenings from 6.30pm at Rye Sports Centre. We offer an 10-week course, which is ideal for those who are totally new to running, returning after a long break or just needing a bit of time to build confidence and fitness. Do drop me a line if you want more information about this or would like to register your interest or read below for some previous attendees' comments.
‘Having not run since my schooldays and never having been particularly keen on PE I was very nervous joining the group. At the first session I was made to feel at ease, which quickly dispelled any fears I had. The coaches were amazing - so supportive, positive and fun to be with. Each week my fitness improved and surprising myself, I started to enjoy the sessions. Not only did my fitness improve, but so did my self-belief that I could actually achieve much more than I ever dreamed I could.’ Lesley Lambeth
‘When I signed up to the beginners’ course I was a complete novice with no running experience whatsoever. It gave me the confidence to start running regularly, helped by really knowledgeable and encouraging trainers. Rye Runners is a really inclusive and welcoming community, I would recommend it to runners of all abilities.’ Hilary Ingleton
‘I had mixed feelings about the beginners’ group, not least because I was afraid that, being one of the oldest (I’m in my mid-fifties), I would not be able to keep up. However, within very few weeks the coaches had managed to develop a team spirit and I began to look forward to the physical challenge, the social contact and laughter. I am astonished by how far and how fast I can now go without expiring.’ Anne Catt
I would totally recommend the beginners’ course to anyone. It builds your fitness up bit by bit, in a way you don’t notice. Six months on, I’m running three times a week - not because I want to run fast or do marathons, purely because I want to be able to run at a moderate pace for an hour. My wife and daughter are both itching to do the course now! Dave Warren
