Fit to the extreme

In the name of research for an article I’m writing for the FT Weekend magazine, I immersed myself in the world of extreme fitness last week – sampling exercise classes that promise to push you to the max and have you begging for mercy. (One even states ‘bring your sick bag…!) It was an eye-opening experience. I thought I was pretty fit but two days after my Grand Circuit class at The Third Space (the ‘grand’ denoting the one thousand exercises that are completed within the circuit) I could barely make it in and out of the car or up the stairs, let alone participate in a bona fide workout. It would appear that the ‘no pain, no gain’ mantra of the 1980s is back – and judging by the punters who frequent these classes, it’s enjoying a new wave of popularity. My mission is to find out what the attraction is to working out till you collapse in a heap on the floor – I’ll post the link to my FT article when it is published on September 25th.
